"HAND, FOOT & MOUTH Disease"
Recently at several day cares, there has been an outbreak of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFM).
HFM is caused by a virus called Coxsackie A-16.
HFM usually affects most children between the ages of 6 months - 4 years.
It causes painful ulcers in the mouth, and small 'water' blisters or red spots in the palms and soles of the feet.
However, children with HFM can have blisters elsewhere, especially the buttocks.
Low-grade fever between 100 - 102 is also very common.
HFM is very contagious. It usually takes 3 - 6 days after exposure for your child to develop HFM.
HFM is harmless, and most children can go back to daycare once their fever has resolved.
Home Care:
· The main treatment for HFM is symptomatic and supportive.
· Fluids: encourage your child to drink lots of cold fluids, especially if there are mouth ulcers.
Avoid citrus drinks or foods that are salty, or foods that require a lot of chewing.
· Fever: Treat your child's fever or discomfort with acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
Avoid aspirin.
· "Magic Mouthwash": in older children, you can make a homemade mouthwash that provides some pain relief.
Simply mix a ½ tsp. of Benadryl and ½ tsp. of Maalox.
Rinse and spit out.
When to Call your Doctor:
Since HFM is mild and goes away in 3 -7 days, call your doctor if:
· Fever lasts longer than 3 - 5 days.
· Your child does not eat or drink, or does not urinate in 8 - 12 hours.
· Anytime your child starts acting very sick!
Always discuss treatment options with your caregiver. Together you can best manage your child's Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease!
